    Archaeological Testing in the Devine Road Area North of Olmos Dam, San Antonio, Texas

    During late January and early February 1978, archaeological testing was carried out in an area north of Olmos Dam, San Antonio, Texas (see Fig. 1) by personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio. This work was performed under contract between CAR and the San Antonio River Authority. The area tested consisted of 16 acres bounded by Olmos Dam to the south, Devine Road to the west and Olmos Creek to the north and east. The objective of the testing was to determine whether any historic or prehistoric resources were present and, if so, to evaluate their significance prior to the use of the location as a borrow pit during the planned renovation of Olmos Dam. During the construction of Olmos Dam in the 1920s, a prehistoric site, 41 BX 1, was uncovered and mostly destroyed. Current testing in this area was designed to determine if any part of the site was left intact and to make recommendations for mitigation or protection. The archaeological testing was performed under the supervision of Dr. Tomas R. Hester, Director and Mr. Jack D. Eaton, Assistant Director, of CAR. The field work was directed by Cristi Assad with the assistance of Augustine Frkuska, Rebekah Halpern and Robert F. Scott. All notes, maps and materials collected are on file at the Center for Archaeological Research

    During November of 1977, five days of archaeological testing were carried out by personnel from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, directly south of Olmos Dam, San Antonio, Texas (see Fig. 1). The testing was done under the supervision of Dr. Thomas R. Hester, Director, and Jack D. Eaton, Assistant Director, and was performed under the terms of a contract between CAR and the San Antonio River Authority. The project conforms to the provisions outlined in the E.D.A. Special Terms and Conditions (III 3a), Grant Number 08-19-01911. Antiquities Permit #161 was obtained from the Texas Historical Commission before field work commenced

    The integral sentence completion test (SCTi) was developed by Susanne Cook-Greuter in 1999. Her SCTi was a revision of the Washington University Sentence Completion Test devised by Jane Loevinger in 1970 and revised in 1985 and again in 1996. The test was devised to measure one\u27s level of ego development by providing 36 stems and asking respondents to complete the sentence stems with whatever comes to their mind. Because the test is semi-projective, the scoring process requires training and familiarity with the test and with the concept of ego development. Jane Loevinger devised a scoring system complete with rules. She and others created scoring manuals for the Washington University Sentence Completion Test complete with sample responses for each of the 36 sentence stems. The scoring manual was updated each time the test was significantly changed. Cook-Grueter is currently in the process of adapting the previous scoring manual to reflect changes in the SCTi. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a scoring manual for the sentence stem People who step out of line at work - (item # 27), which is one of the stems that was added by Cook-Greuter to the SCTi. The first step was to review the history of ego development theory and measurement tools coming out of that theory. After reviewing general theory, it was necessary to analyze data that was provided by Cook-Greuter. In all, 627 responses were analyzed and placed into general categories for the purpose of creating a manual. Once the manual was created, an analysis of findings was done and discussed in the final chapte

    A general framework for energy-efficient cloud computing mechanisms

    We present a general model for the operation of a cloud computing server comprised of one or more speed-scalable processors. Typically, tasks are submitted to such a cloud computing server in an online fashion, and the server operator has to schedule the tasks and decides on payments without knowledge about the tasks arriving in the future. Although very natural, this cloud computing problem on speed-scalable processors has not been studied from a mechanism design perspective in the online setting. We provide a mechanism for this setting, both for a single and multiprocessor environment, that has several desirable properties: (1) the induced game admits a subgame perfect equilibrium in pure strategies and therefore a pure Nash equilibrium, (2) the Price of Anarchy is constant, (3) the mechanism is budget balanced, i.e., the sum of the payments of the agents is equal to the total energy costs, (4) the communication complexity is low, (5) the mechanism is computationally tractable for both the service operator and the agents, and (6) the agents' payment is also intuitive and easy to communicate to them. We also provide a second mechanism with a better Price of Anarchy, which in turn is more involved to implement. We are able to extend our mechanisms and results to the Bayesian setting, where the type of each agent is drawn independently from some underlying distribution and agents are minimizing their expected costs. In this setting we also show the same approximation factor of our mechanism as in the basic online setting in both the single and the multiprocessor environment

    Carbamazepine alone and in combination with doxycycline attenuates isoproterenol-induced cardiac hypertrophy

    β-adrenergic signaling is involved in the development of cardiac hypertrophy (CH), justifying the use of β-blockers as a therapy to minimize and postpone the consequences of this disease. Evidence suggests that adenylate cyclase, a downstream effector of the β-adrenergic pathway, might be a therapeutic target. We examined the effects of the anti-epileptic drug carbamazepine (CBZ), an inhibitor of adenylate cyclase. In a murine cardiac hypertrophy model, carbamazepine significantly attenuates isoproteronol (ISO)-induced cardiac hypertrophy. Carbamazepine also has an effect in transverse aortic banding induced cardiac hypertrophy (TAB) (P=0.07). When carbamazepine was given in combination with the antibiotic doxycycline (DOX), which inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), therapeutic outcome measured by heart weight-to-body weight and heart weight-to-tibia length ratios was improved compared to either drug alone. Additionally, the combination therapy resulted in an increase in the survival rate over a 56-day period compared to that of untreated mice with cardiac hypertrophy or either drug used alone. Moreover, in support of a role for carbamaze -pine as a β-adrenergic antagonist via cAMP inhibition, a lower heart rate and a lower level of the activated phosphorylated form of the cAMP Response Element-Binding (CREB) were observed in heart extracts from mice treated with carbamazepine. Gene expression analysis identified 19 genes whose expression is significantly altered in treated animals and might be responsible for the added benefit provided by the combination therapy. These results suggest that carbamazepine acts as a β-adrenergic antagonist. Carbamazepine and doxycycline are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as drugs that might complement medications for cardiac hypertrophy or serve as an alternative therapy to traditional β-blockers. Furthermore, these agents reproducibly impact the expression of genes that may serve as additional therapeutic targets in the management of cardiac hypertrophy
